Ex Racehorse Curlew is heading off to Hickstead

Horse 'Curlew' and winning jockey with rosettes.

Another Yeoman Haylage fed horse, ex racehorse Curlew, owned by Clair Parnham from Kentisbeare and ridden by Donna Bamonte, won the Retraining of Racehorses class recently at the Liskeard show in Cornwall on 11th July qualifying him for the final to be held at the world famous Hickstead Derby meeting in 2016.

This September, nine year old thoroughbred Curlew who has raced on both the flat and National Hunt up to the age of seven, will be off to Burghley to take part in his first ‘Horse of the Year’ qualifier, again in the Retraining of Racehorses class.

To take part at places such as Hickstead and the Horse of the Year are the dream of many top riders, most of whom will never get there. It’s an achievement few can be proud of and only the top and dedicated combinations will get there.

Donna has worked in racing yards for the last 17 years and travels around the UK now showing horses. She has her own special ex racehorse, a beautiful twelve year old thoroughbred called Valentine Jak who has twenty one first places under his belt.

Jak has qualified for the Horse of the Year Show for the last three years finishing sixth in the Racehorse to Riding Horse final 2014. He was also fifth at Hickstead this year, proving he’s amongst the top performers. Donna says that Curlew is showing just as much promise to do the same, so she and Clair have great hopes for him for the future.

Donna loves to combine racing and showing and says how much she loves to give ex racers a new start in life.
